I have been working in the energy sector for almost 15 years. I completed a PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde focusing on the optimisation of distribution networks with high level of wind and solar. Following that I worked with electricity network companies helping them deliver innovation projects. That included the Northern Isles New Energy Solutions (NINES) project on Shetland with SSEN and the Accelerating Renewable Connectors (ARC) with SP Energy Networks.

After initially training in physics and astronomy, I worked as a high school physics teacher before return
